Ideal Cut — Maximum Brilliance

The Most Important C

Cut

Cut is the only C determined by human craftsmanship — it controls brilliance (white light), fire (coloured flashes), and scintillation (sparkle). A poorly cut diamond will appear dull regardless of colour or clarity.

At Pattern Gold, we stock only Excellent and Very Good cut grades. We inspect every stone personally before it enters our collection.

Ideal

Less than 3% of all diamonds achieve Ideal cut. Light enters and exits directly through the table — maximum brilliance and fire.

Excellent

Top 10% of diamonds. Virtually identical to Ideal in appearance but slightly more accessible in price.

Very Good

Reflects most light. Excellent value — face-up appearance nearly identical to Excellent at a lower price point. Our recommended tier.

Good

Reflects most light but loses some brilliance. Consider spending saved money on a higher carat or colour.

Fair

Significant light leakage. Visually dull. We do not recommend these grades for engagement or statement pieces.

D — Absolutely Colourless

The rarest and most valuable grade. Completely colourless — a benchmark used by gemologists worldwide.

Purity of Light

Colour

Diamond colour refers to the absence of colour. The GIA grades diamonds on a scale from D (absolutely colourless) to Z (light yellow). The less colour, the higher the grade — and the more valuable the stone.

At Pattern Gold, we recommend D–H for engagement rings where whiteness matters most. For yellow gold settings, I–J can appear nearly colourless and offer exceptional value.

Our Recommendation by Setting

💍
Platinum / White GoldD–F (Colourless)

White metals amplify any yellow tint — choose D–F to maintain icy brilliance.

💛
18K Yellow GoldG–J (Near Colourless)

Yellow gold masks slight tints — G–J appears white face-up and saves significantly.

🌹
18K Rose GoldG–K (Near Colourless)

Warm rose tones complement slight warmth in the diamond, making K appear beautiful.

Clarity

Clarity measures the presence of natural inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external) formed during a diamond's creation. The GIA clarity scale has 11 grades from Flawless to Included.

The key is finding an "eye-clean" diamond — one where inclusions are not visible to the naked eye. VS1–VS2 and SI1 are often the sweet spot, offering beauty and value.

💡 Pattern Gold Tip

For solitaire rings where the diamond is prominently displayed, we recommend VS1 or better. For pavé or halo settings where the diamond is smaller, SI1 is often excellent value.

Weight & Size

Carat

Carat is the unit of weight for diamonds — one carat equals 0.2 grams. Larger diamonds are exponentially rarer, which is why price increases more than proportionally with carat weight.

However, carat alone doesn't determine beauty. A well-cut 0.8ct can appear larger and more brilliant than a poorly-cut 1.0ct. The 4Cs work together — never sacrifice cut for carat.

💡 The Magic Sizes

Diamonds just under 0.50ct, 0.75ct, and 1.00ct offer significantly better value than their "round" counterparts — often 15–20% less expensive with visually identical size.

Third-Party Verification

Diamond Certification

A diamond certificate is an independent grading report issued by a gemological laboratory — your assurance of exactly what you're purchasing.

GIA

Gemological Institute of America

The global gold standard for diamond grading. Founded in 1931, GIA invented the 4Cs and the International Diamond Grading System™. All Pattern Gold solitaires above 0.5ct come with GIA certification.
